1. Facebook – Ranked #2 globally, Ranked #2 in the US, 350 million users
Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates in 2004. Zuckerberg, then a sophomore at Harvard, initially named his program “TheFacebook” and restricted membership to Harvard students. In 2005, the name was shortened to Facebook and by 2006 membership was opened to anyone over 13.

Established in 1999, LiveJournal is one of the oldest social networks on the scene today. The site allows users to keep an online diary or blog along with a standard profile that may be shared with others in their social network.
